Jonathan Thomas resigns after six seasons as the head coach of the Royals

After six seasons as the head coach of the Mason County Royals football team, Jonathan Thomas has resigned. He will be the Director of Transportation for the Mason County School District beginning with the 2021-22 school year.

Thomas, a 2000 graduate of Mason County High School, was an assistant coach for the Royals for 12 seasons before being promoted to head coach after David Buchanan stepped down after 19 seasons to become the head coach at his alma mater, Mercer County, in 2015.

Thomas, the first former Royal to serve as the head football coach at Mason County, compiled a 24-37 record. He was named Class AAAA District Coach of the Year in 2016 and 2017.

A press release from Mason County High School on Wednesday said a search for the next football coach would begin immediately.
